Get 304 stainless steel or glass. Both are inert, so neither one puts anything into the whisky. Skip pewter unless the maker says lead-free, and skip unmarked bargain steel altogether. The thing that wrecks whiskey in a flask is time. The flask almost never is.

Why whiskey belongs in a flask

Whisky is 40% ABV or higher1, with no sugar and no carbonation. Nothing grows at that strength, so what's in the flask won't make you ill. What it will do is go flat: an opened, part-full container loses flavour over months as the air above the liquid works on it.

Everything else is where flasks got their bad name: fizzy drinks build pressure against the gasket until it weeps, liqueurs leave a sugar film, cream turns. That leaves bourbon, scotch, rye, Irish, brandy and rum. See what to put in a hip flask for the ones that go wrong in an afternoon.

Stainless vs glass vs pewter: what makes the best hip flask for whisky

304 stainless steel. Inert, won't rust, won't dent when you sit on it. Look for the grade stamped somewhere: 304, also sold as 18/82, is food-grade3. A welded seam beats a soldered one, because solder is where the old lead problem4 lived.

Glass. Nothing to taste, ever, and you can see the color. The sleeve takes most of the impact and it still breaks. Leave headspace, or the pressure has nowhere to go when the flask warms in your pocket.

Pewter. Heavy and soft, good in the hand. Modern pewter is lead-free. Antique pewter may not be, and you can't tell by looking. Put flowers in that one.

Unmarked cheap steel. The $6 flask with no grade printed anywhere is the one that puts a tinny edge in your whisky by hour two. Copper needs a tin lining for the same reason.

How long whiskey lasts in a flask

Drink it within a few days. A week or two won't hurt you, though you'll taste it flatter and faintly of steel. That's oxidation from the air trapped above the liquid, and the emptier the flask, the bigger the air gap.

Whisky keeps for years in a sealed bottle because there's almost no air in it5. A half-full flask in a warm jacket is the opposite arrangement. Nothing dangerous happens; it just stops tasting like the bottle.

Fill it the day you go out, pour back what's left when you get home. Cleaning a hip flask is four minutes of rinsing and drying it upside down.

Whiskey flask FAQ

Is whiskey in a flask still good? Yes. Spirits at 40% ABV don't spoil, so a flask that sat in a drawer for a month is safe to drink. What changes is flavor: air above the liquid oxidises it, and steel can leave a faint metallic edge. Empty it, rinse it, refill it.

What is the best flask for whiskey? A 6 or 8 oz flask in 304 stainless steel, or glass in a protective sleeve if you want nothing between you and the spirit. Both are inert. Avoid unmarked steel, avoid antique pewter you can't date, and check the seam is welded rather than soldered.

Is it legal to carry a flask with liquor? Carrying one is legal across most of the US. Drinking from it is the regulated part. Open-container laws are written state by state and city by city, and they cover cars, streets and parks. Stadiums and transit systems add their own rules. This isn't legal advice, so check the venue.
